Sweetwater County Library, Green River

The Sweetwater County Library in Green River, WY, is considered haunted because it was built on the site of the city's first cemetery, which contained many unmarked graves and was thought to be moved but was not completely. Visitors and staff have reported phenomena such as apparitions, unexplained K2 meter activity, electronic devices malfunctioning, the smell of pipe tobacco, and the sound of swishing skirts. Many residents, including Chinese railroad workers who died from smallpox, were buried in unmarked graves within this cemetery. While the cemetery was believed to have been moved, the process was not complete, and the library was built on top of some of the graves. Electronic devices, such as K2 EMF meters (used to detect electromagnetic signals, thought to be linked to spirits), have been reported to turn on and off randomly. People have reported smelling pipe tobacco and hearing the sound of swishing skirts. Some experiences include seeing apparitions and other unexplained figures, including perceived animal spirits. Objects are sometimes found to move on their own, and necklaces have been observed to swing as if moved by an unseen force.
