The historic building in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, that was once the Evergreen Inn Hotel is widely reported to be haunted. Now home to the horror-themed Dead by Dawn Dead & Breakfast and other businesses, the location has a reputation for paranormal activity centered around the spirit of the hotel's founder, Walter Schroeder, as well as unsettling occurrences in specific rooms. The ghost of hotel founder Walter Schroeder is said to still haunt the building's halls. In Room 717, guests and staff have reported hearing unexplained screams and television noises. The door to this room is also known to shake violently, as if someone were kicking it from the inside. Reports of mischievous paranormal activity include cups flying off carts and ice cubes inexplicably being thrown. An elevator in the building is said to occasionally smell of cigar smoke, suggesting a phantom presence. Some staff members have experienced more sinister encounters. One former employee reported a spooky incident after a gala. Both guests and staff have reported their hair being mysteriously pulled. Televisions in the building are known to change channels on their own.
