The Ghost of Howard Bok: Howard Bok was a sailor on his way to Alaska during the Gold Rush who was murdered in the building, according to stories. His spirit is said to reside in the pub's small back room, known as the Snug Room. Reports suggest he can be strongly felt after hours and may even play the piano in the Snug Room. The pub even has a menu item, "Howard's Special," consisting of a bagel dog and a pint of Pabst, in his honor. A red light at the bottom of the stairs was used in the 1930s by a prostitute to signal she was working, and it is still present. The pub has many stories and legends, some of which are ghost stories, contributing to its atmosphere.
