Woodlawn Plantation is said to be haunted by former owners like John Mason, with reports of thumping sounds, and a sense of a spiritual gateway in the "Well of Souls". Paranormal activity includes flickering lights, doors that open and close on their own, and the disembodied sounds of big-band music. U.S. Senator Oscar Wilder Underwood's spirit is also believed to reside in the "apartment room," where he died. A former owner, believed to haunt the home, with some claiming to hear him thumping up and down the stairs. Located in the basement, this well is believed to be a point of entry for spirits. Guests and staff have heard big-band music, similar to the Glenn Miller Orchestra, but no radio is found in the house, and the music stops when investigated. Lights will reportedly turn on by themselves after being switched off, and doors that are locked will sometimes fly open on their own. In addition to John Mason, other spiritual phenomena include claims of ghostly soldiers and figures in historic dress roaming the grounds.
