The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, VA, has several reported haunting tales, including the spirits of cadets in turret rooms, a mysterious figure known as "The Yellow Peril" in Old Barracks, and a "friendly" time-keeping ghost that taps on doors to wake up oversleeping cadets. Other alleged phenomena include objects moving, windows closing on their own, and unexplained touches. Turret Rooms: Located in the Old Barracks, these secluded rooms were once used for cadets awaiting expulsion by the Honor Court. Stories claim that spirits remain in these rooms, causing items like cups to fly, shades to pull down, and windows to shut. Some also report feeling a touch on their shoulder before falling asleep. This ghost is described as having a yellow pallor and a gash across its face. The Yellow Peril is said to appear in the corner of the staircase on Third Stoop in Old Barracks and follows cadets back to their rooms. A spirit that patrols the Washington Arch side of the barracks during winter months, and has also been sighted in August and September. A benevolent spirit associated with VMI's "Stick Check" tradition, which involved tapping on cadet doors. This ghost is said to give a punctual wake-up tap to cadets who have overslept. Cups and other objects reportedly fly off surfaces. Tapping on doors and the "All right!" responses from cadets are part of VMI's ghost stories. Windows are said to shut on their own, despite efforts to keep them open. Some individuals report feeling a touch on their shoulder in the early hours of the morning.
