Tuckahoe Plantation is reportedly haunted by a spectral figure known as the Gray Lady, named for her Victorian clothing, and is associated with sightings of eerie figures, the appearance of cold mists, and strange phenomena like doors opening and closing and lights turning on and off. Some accounts also include physical contact, such as hair being pulled, and the presence of cold spots. These reported hauntings are said to occur in the main building and other structures on the well-preserved colonial plantation, which was the childhood home of Thomas Jefferson. The primary reported apparition, a female figure in Victorian attire. Other spectral figures are said to wander the plantation grounds. Instances of lights mysteriously turning on and off and apparitions entering and exiting closed closet doors have been reported. Some visitors and guides have experienced physical sensations, such as a tour guide's hair being pulled and a cold indentation appearing beside her while lying in an old slave cabin. A chilly mist sometimes fills the air on hot days.
