Shirley Plantation is reportedly haunted by Aunt Pratt (Martha Hill), whose ghost became active after her portrait was moved to the attic, with activity ceasing once it was returned to its prominent place on the wall. Her presence is said to be noticeable, with some claiming to see her gaze in the window of the room where her portrait hangs. Another story involves the violent rocking of Martha Hill's portrait on its own, shaking so hard it risked falling off the wall. The Legend of Aunt Pratt: Aunt Pratt, whose given name was Martha Hill, was the daughter of a past owner of Shirley Plantation. She moved to England after finishing school, married, and passed away there without returning to Shirley. The legend states that after her death, her portrait was taken down and stored in the attic. Strange noises and unsettling occurrences were reported to come from the attic, leading the family to believe Aunt Pratt was disturbed. The portrait was eventually returned to its place on the wall, and the supernatural activity reportedly stopped. Some visitors and residents report seeing the ghost's gaze through the window of the room where her portrait is displayed. Additionally, a portrait of Martha Hill is said to rock violently on its own, threatening to fall from the wall.
