Monticello is said to be haunted by its builder, Thomas Jefferson, and his lover, Sally Hemings, as well as other enslaved people and perhaps even former residents like the children of Jefferson. Eyewitness accounts include seeing Jefferson's full-bodied apparition, hearing whispers of names like "Lewis" and "Ben", and witnessing shadowy figures moving through the historic home. These stories are often told on Charlottesville ghost tours, highlighting the site's history of suffering and struggle. Visitors have reported seeing full-bodied apparitions of Thomas Jefferson, sometimes described as an older version of himself, and the spirit of Sally Hemings. Other figures, including a "maid-like woman," have also been seen. Guests have reported hearing whispers, with one visitor hearing the name "Lewis" multiple times and other names such as "Adams" and "Ben". There have been accounts of doors and doorknobs being manipulated by unseen forces, despite a lack of significant air currents.
