The Martha Washington Inn & Spa is rumored to be haunted by several spirits, including Beth, a student who cared for a dying Yankee soldier during the Civil War, and the soldiers themselves. Guests have reported hearing Beth's violin music, seeing a candle in a darkened hallway, and even glimpsing a ghostly, riderless horse on the grounds. The inn was used as a makeshift Civil War hospital, contributing to the supernatural lore surrounding the building. The most prominent legend is about Beth, a student who is said to have played her violin for a wounded Yankee captain. After the captain died, Beth later died of typhoid fever. Her spirit is believed to remain, sometimes heard playing her violin on the third floor, particularly on full moon nights. Some also report smelling lilacs when her spirit is near. Due to its history as a hospital for both Confederate and Union troops during the Civil War, the inn is said to be haunted by the spirits of wounded soldiers. A riderless horse is occasionally spotted on the inn's south lawn on moonless nights. Guests and staff have reported hearing violin music, especially on the third floor. The scent of lilacs has been noted in certain areas. Some claim to have seen a flickering candle in the darkened hallways of the inn. The ghostly riderless horse is seen on the lawn.
