George Washington's Mount Vernon is described as a historically haunted site, with accounts from its history including the presence of the nation's first president, George Washington, in his bedchamber, and other apparitions like an unidentified woman on the Central Passage. Multiple visitors and historical accounts mention seeing or feeling the presence of George Washington in his former bedchamber. An 1890 newspaper report noted that people who slept in the room felt a powerful presence of the first president. Staff and visitors have also reported sightings of other spirits, including an older woman and a young girl, on the mansion's main staircase and in the Central Passage. One interpreter reported seeing an unidentified woman dressed in 18th-century clothing in the Central Passage. There are stories of disembodied voices, including a staff member hearing someone exclaim, "What the hell is going on here?" from the Little Parlor. Beyond spectral sightings, other reported phenomena include unseen forces pushing visitors, unexplained alarms, and sudden drops and returns to normal temperatures in the mansion's rooms.
