Ferry Plantation House, Virginia Beach

The Ferry Plantation House in Virginia Beach is considered one of the most haunted places in Virginia, with reports of over 11 different spirits. Paranormal investigators and visitors have recorded frequent activity, though the spirits are generally described as friendly or benign rather than malicious. The property is closely linked to Virginia's last convicted witch, Grace Sherwood, who was subjected to a "trial by water" nearby in 1706. After she floated, she was imprisoned for seven years. The trial is believed to have taken place at the courthouse that once stood on the Ferry Plantation site. Sherwood is said to roam the grounds, and a monument in her honor stands nearby. This spirit reportedly broke her neck in a fall down the main staircase. Another former resident is seen mourning a fallen soldier, believed to be her fiancé who was killed in the War of 1812. A formerly enslaved man named Henry lived his entire life at Ferry Plantation. He is known for saving people from a fire that destroyed the original manor house in 1828. His spirit is often felt in the attic, where he lived after the Civil War. A friend of a paranormal investigator once heard a voice telling them to "come on up" when given permission to enter Henry's room. The ghost of an artist, Thomas Williamson, is sometimes seen painting at the top of the stairs. Visitors have reported hearing disembodied children's voices and seeing ghostly figures on the second-floor landing. Bessie, a five-year-old girl's spirit, is considered quite friendly and has reportedly given a paranormal investigator "hugs" around the thigh. A ghostly nanny is said to continue caring for the spirits of the children within the house. Lights turning on and off by themselves. The sound of children's voices and toys moving on their own. A chandelier shaking with no discernible cause. A white electrical cord reportedly suspended in mid-air in the attic. The sound of dragging chains, possibly from the building's days as a courthouse. Ghostly scenes playing out on Saturday evenings.
