Dejarnette Building, Western State Hospital, Staunton
The Dejarnette Building is the original structure of the Blackburn Inn in Staunton, VA, which was the site of the former Western State Hospital for the mentally ill. The building has a variety of reported hauntings, including quiet moans, showers turning on by themselves, flickering lights, and locked windows opening on their own, all attributed to its long history as a psychiatric facility. The Western State Hospital was founded in 1825 and opened its doors to the first patient in 1828. The building has served multiple purposes, acting as a psychiatric hospital, a medium-security prison, and eventually being renovated into the Blackburn Inn in 2018. Guests have reported hearing the quiet moans of the word "home". Showers have been observed turning on by themselves. Lights have been seen flickering on and off. Locked windows have been witnessed opening on their own.
