Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre, Bristow
The Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre is known for its paranormal activity, stemming from its history as the county seat of Prince William County for nearly a century. The site features several historic buildings, including an old courthouse and jail, which are the source of many of the ghost stories. The most prominent ghost story connected to the site involves a man named James Clark: In 1872, Clark eloped with a woman named Fanny Fuel. Fanny's family accused Clark of kidnapping her. He was captured and imprisoned in the Brentsville jail while awaiting trial. Murdered in his cell: Fanny's brother, Lucian Fuel, tracked Clark down and shot him inside his jail cell. Lucian was later acquitted of the murder. It is said that the ghost of James Clark still wanders the jailhouse, seeking justice. The Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre has used its haunted reputation to draw visitors, offering candlelight tours where guides share "strange and scary events" from the site's history. Some visitors and staff have reported seeing ghostly figures on the grounds, though details are often unspecific. Other common experiences at the historic center include sudden drops in temperature and an unsettling feeling of being watched.
