The Black Horse Inn (now Black Horse Manor) in Warrenton, Virginia, is rumored to be haunted by several ghosts due to its history as a Civil War hospital. The property, which dates back to the 1850s, saw many soldiers die within its walls. A spirit believed to be a nurse from the Civil War era has been known to laugh or whisper in male guests' ears. Ghostly tapping sounds, like someone dancing, have been heard in the halls, most often at the top of the stairs. In the Burgundy Room, a male spirit is said to make an impression on the comforter, as if he is lying on the bed. For several years, ornaments were reportedly broken after a Christmas tree was tipped over. As a result, the tree is now secured to the wall. Some guests report hearing the faint, chaotic sounds of the Civil War, and the ghosts of nurses may be heard laughing as if to comfort traumatized soldiers. Apparitions of bloodstains have been seen on the floors, only to vanish minutes later.
