The Brattleboro Retreat is known for being one of the most haunted spots in Vermont, primarily due to two locations: the Retreat Tower, a site of historical incidents like a reported 1923 self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the Retreat Cemetery, the final resting place for numerous former patients. Many ghost stories circulate around the tower and the cemetery, making them popular destinations for ghost hunters and people interested in the area's dark history. The tower was built by patients in 1887. A lead cello player from the New York Metropolitan Opera House, Carl W. Dodge, was found dead near the tower with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his temple in 1923. The tower has been the subject of many strange occurrences and is considered a popular and haunted location.
