The most common version of the legend states that Boots died during a blizzard while saving guests on the inn's roof. During storms, visitors and staff sometimes hear heavy, distinct footsteps on the roof, which they believe is Boots, reliving his final act. Guests have reported hearing faint, unexplained music within the inn. Some witnesses claim to have seen figures sitting in chairs that are empty when the door is opened.
