The Rio Grande Railroad Depot in Salt Lake City is associated with the ghost of the "Purple Lady," an ill-fated lover whose ring was lost on the train tracks, leading to her tragic death. Visitors and staff have reported seeing apparitions of her, hearing her singing in restrooms, experiencing mysterious door slams and flickering lights, and hearing her footsteps on the mezzanine. Some also believe a male ghost, possibly a former stationmaster or the Purple Lady's fiancé, may also haunt the depot. The Purple Lady was said to be a woman who threw her ring onto the train tracks after a lover's quarrel, only to realize she had made a mistake. She was struck and killed by a train while trying to retrieve the ring. Her spirit is often described as wandering the depot and causing unexplained phenomena. People have reportedly seen the Purple Lady, often wearing a purple dress, on the mezzanine and in other parts of the building. Eerie sounds, such as singing in the women's restroom, footsteps, and inexplicable bangs, have been reported. Doors have been heard slamming shut, and lights have been observed turning on and off on their own. Some believe other spirits, such as a male ghost who could be a past stationmaster or the Purple Lady's fiancé, may also inhabit the depot.
