The Alta Club is rumored to be haunted by two distinct spirits: a man whose ghost lingers on the upper floors after a fatal fire he caused with a lit cigar, and a female spirit in the basement known for the distinct smell of lilac perfume and a gentle touch on the shoulder, according to Utah Haunted Houses. The Man in the Upper Floors: The story describes a man who fell asleep with a lit cigar, accidentally starting a fire that consumed the upper floor and resulted in his death. His spirit is said to still wander these areas of the private gentleman's club, which was founded in 1883. Another reported haunting occurs in the basement, where a female spirit is said to announce her presence with the scent of lilac perfume. She is also known to lightly touch visitors on the shoulder.
