Anson Lights, Anson

The Anson Lights refer to a spooky phenomenon near Anson, Texas, where a ghostly lantern light is sometimes seen, particularly near a cemetery. Legend says it's the spirit of a grieving mother, from the 1800s, still searching for her lost sons, whose calls for help were unheard. Some versions of the legend claim the light is the spirit of a woman who died while looking for her children or a toddler, while others say she died during a blizzard. One specific ritual is said to summon the light: turn your car around at a specific crossroads, facing back towards the main road, and flash your headlights three times, after which the light is said to appear. The most well-known tale describes a pioneer woman in the 1800s who sent her three sons out to chop wood. She told them to flash their lantern three times if they encountered any trouble. The flashes came, but by the time help arrived, the boys were already dead. The woman's spirit is said to continue her desperate search for her lost sons through the dark Texas nights, the ghostly lantern bobbing before her.
