Samuel Cleage House, Athens
The Samuel Cleage House in Athens, Tennessee, is known colloquially as the Clegg House and is reputed to be haunted due to its long history of death and tragedy. The property now operates as a haunted attraction called The Scream Chamber, and paranormal investigators claim to have captured evidence of hauntings. The most prominent ghost story involves Samuel Cleage himself. In July 1850, Cleage was stabbed multiple times during a heated argument with a man named Ambrose Griffith. Cleage died from his wounds, and Griffith fled, never to be seen again. The house was once home to a slave named Mamie during the Civil War. According to a reenactment and tour from a previous iteration of the haunted attraction, Mamie was involved in a confrontation with a Union soldier, which ended with her killing him. Visitors claim to hear voices and see apparitions related to this story. Tenants who lived in the house before it became a haunted attraction reported being unable to stay due to noises, voices, and other unexplained paranormal activity. The current owners, The Scream Chamber, have documented evidence of paranormal activity in the house. This includes reports of heavy EMF readings, EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recordings, unexplained lights, and mists. Some visitors have even reported experiencing partial possessions. After nearly 200 years of documented deaths, locals consider the old mansion to be so haunted that some refuse to go near it.
