The former Harriman Hospital in Harriman, Tennessee, now known as Old Historic Harriman Hospital (OHHH), is rumored to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States. The paranormal activity is believed to stem from the hospital's history, which includes a deadly flood, decades of treating the sick and dying, and a prominent on-site death. Since closing in 2013, the building has been converted into a paranormal investigation site. Accounts include sightings of a disappearing older man and a phantom nun in the maternity ward. Shadow people are also a common sighting throughout the building. Investigators and former staff have reported hearing unexplained disembodied voices, including babies crying in the old nursery and whispers in the psych ward. Ghost hunters have also captured electronic voice phenomena (EVPs) on audio recordings. The A3 cardiac care unit is allegedly haunted by the spirit of a nurse named Joanna, who suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty. She loved her work and reportedly remains attached to the hospital. The morgue hallway: This area is particularly active, with guards reporting a distressed voice calling for help from the lower floors. The ER is said to still hold the "psychic residue" of past traumas. Visitors have described feeling as if the room is still in operation, with phantom doctors and patients going about their business. Unexplained physical events include doors opening and closing on their own and people being touched when no one else is around. Paranormal investigators speculate that some of the activity may be tied to the land itself. Before the hospital's construction, the property was the site of the Cumberland Hotel, which burned down, and an earlier bank failure. Some also believe that the limestone bedrock under Harriman is a conduit for paranormal energy.
