Baynard Plantation Ruins, Hilton Head Island
The Stoney Baynard Ruins are associated with a ghost story involving the plantation's original owner, William Bayard, who is rumored to haunt the site after his death. Visitors report seeing and hearing a funeral procession for Bayard, complete with phantom mourners and music, especially at night. Other alleged paranormal experiences at the ruins include unexplained cold spots and feelings of sadness. The plantation was built between 1793 and 1810 and later acquired by William Bayard in 1840. During the Civil War, Union forces raided the plantation, making it their headquarters. After the Bayard family fled, the plantation was burned down by Union forces shortly after the war. The ruins are made of tabby, a durable material created by burning oyster shells to produce lime and then mixing it with sand and water. The most prominent haunting story involves a funeral procession for William Bayard, which visitors have claimed to witness.
