St. Philip's Graveyard, Charleston
St. Philip's Graveyard is described as haunted by the ghost of Sue Howard Hardy, a woman who died of after-birth complications in 1888 and whose apparition was captured in a famous 1987 photograph, and by the "Gray Man", a shadow-like figure, possibly the spirit of an enslaved man named Will, who is said to appear to deliver a message. Visitors report seeing a melancholy female figure, presumed to be Sue Howard Hardy, mourning at a grave, as well as the eerie, silent presence of the Gray Man. Sue Howard Hardy died six days after giving birth to a stillborn child in 1888. Her grieving spirit remained at the cemetery for 99 years until June 10, 1987, when amateur photographer Harry Reynolds captured a photograph of a ghostly woman in a white dress kneeling at a headstone. Visitors believe they have seen this melancholic female apparition, thought to be Mrs. Hardy. This ghost is described as a gray, shadow-like figure, sometimes seen leaning against a gravestone or appearing in an eerie silence. Some legends suggest the Gray Man is the spirit of an enslaved man named Will, a boatman who heroically saved the original Saint Philip Church from fire in 1796. According to the legend, this ghost only appears to deliver a message to those who see him.
