The former South Carolina State Hospital, also known as the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum or "Bull Street," has a chilling history that has led to a reputation for being haunted. Its long history of mistreatment and institutionalization of patients, along with its current state of abandonment and redevelopment, contribute to its paranormal lore. Visitors have reported hearing the echoing cries and laughs of children in the lonely hallways. Some visitors claim to have felt a spirit's hand on their cheek, a light push on their shoulder, or a tug on their clothing. Old medical equipment on the property has reportedly been moved by unseen forces. A YouTube video showed a room in the abandoned Williams building with a pentagram drawn on the floor, surrounded by bullet casings and crime scene tape. Some urban explorers have described feeling a general sense of unease or "the heebie-jeebies" while inside the buildings. In 2010, the former property was used as a haunted attraction, featuring elements like moving medical implements and echoing cries.
