All Saints Cemetery in Pawleys Island is most famously associated with the ghost of Alice Flagg, a young woman who died in the 19th century. According to legend, Alice fell in love with a man of lower social standing, and her disapproving brother sent her away, where she contracted malaria and died. After her death, her brother supposedly removed the engagement ring she wore, burying her with a simple flat stone marked only "Alice". Visitors leave tokens and flowers on the grave, and some believe that walking around it a specific number of times can summon her spirit in search of her lost ring. The Legend of Alice Flagg: Alice was from a wealthy family but fell in love with a man her brother deemed socially unacceptable. To prevent the relationship, her brother sent Alice to a boarding school in Charleston. She contracted malaria and was brought home to die. Before burying her, her brother discovered the engagement ring Alice wore on a ribbon and, in anger, tore it off and threw it into the woods. He buried her in the Flagg family plot at All Saints Cemetery, using a simple, flat stone marked only "Alice" to avoid family shame. Visitors leave offerings such as white flowers, rings, and other trinkets on her grave, often resulting in a ring of dirt around the stone. Some believe that if a person walks around the grave a specific number of times (six or thirteen), Alice's spirit may appear or the ring she was searching for may move. Alice is said to wander the area, still searching for her lost ring and her lost love.
