The most famous ghost story at Newberry College involves a woman named Madeline. According to the legend, Madeline and John were deeply in love, but rumors of her infidelity spread, causing John to fall from the Keller Hall steeple to his death. Madeline, on her way to confess her innocence, stumbled before Keller Hall and discovered John's body, letting out a scream heard across campus. Her ghost is said to appear on November 17th, the anniversary of the tragedy, roaming the campus and crying out for John. People have reported hearing voices in upstairs rooms only to find no one present. The campus has experienced instances of objects moving, such as an office refrigerator being unplugged overnight.
