Dock Street Theatre, Charleston
The Dock Street Theatre is considered one of Charleston's most haunted buildings, with reports of various ghostly phenomena and specific spirits, most notably the prostitute Nettie Dickerson and Junius Brutus Booth, the father of John Wilkes Booth. Visitors have reported shadowy figures, apparitions on stage, unexplained movements, and feelings of unease. Nettie Dickerson: A prostitute murdered on the premises in the 1800s, she is described as a young woman in a red dress whose presence causes sadness. Junius Brutus Booth: The father of presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth, who once stayed at the theatre and allegedly attempted to kill the manager, his spirit is often seen on stage and backstage. The building was destroyed in a fire in 1740, and some spirits from that event are believed to linger. Other reported phenomena include ghostly shadows in the rafters, unexplained cold spots, feelings of being touched, and the sensation of being watched.
