Cry Baby Bridge, Anderson
The Anderson, South Carolina Crybaby Bridge is rumored to be haunted by a distraught mother who threw her baby into the river below, resulting in cries of a baby and the apparition of the woman searching for her child. While a newer concrete bridge was built in 1987, visitors still report hearing crying, experiencing vehicle electronic issues, and seeing the white-clad ghost of the mother, especially during a full moon after midnight. The bridge itself is an old metal truss bridge located on High Shoals Road. The most common story involves an unwed farm girl who, overwhelmed by grief and hardship, tossed her crying newborn into the waters of Crybaby Creek. She was later found dead by suicide, adding to the bridge's chilling history. Visitors report hearing the sounds of a baby crying, or the mother screaming in guilt or calling out to her child. The apparition of a woman in white is sometimes seen searching the waters below the bridge. You may hear the distinct sound of a baby crying or the woman's screams. Witnesses have reported seeing a ghostly woman in white floating near the bridge or looking into the water. Some people have experienced their car's engine failing to start or its headlights dying after parking on the bridge.
