The White Horse Tavern in Newport, RI, is a reportedly haunted location known for spectral sightings of a man in colonial garb, disembodied footsteps, and unseen taps on the shoulder. The primary spirit is believed to be an elderly man who died upstairs from illness in 1720. Visitors and staff have also reported hearing disembodied voices and sensing presences, even when the building is empty. The most recognized spirit is an elderly man in colonial dress, seen near where he died on the second floor, in the main dining room by the fireplace, and as a reflection in the dining room mirror. Reports include the sound of footsteps, even when no one is there, and disembodied voices. Staff and visitors have described being tapped on the shoulder by an unseen person and sensing a palpable presence when the building is empty. Other accounts include the disembodied laugh of a child and the apparition of a woman floating above a dining table. The White Horse Tavern, operating since 1673, is America's oldest operating tavern and a National Historic Landmark.
