The Gettysburg Hotel, Gettysburg
The Gettysburg Hotel is widely regarded as one of Pennsylvania's most haunted places, with much of the paranormal activity attributed to its use as a field hospital during the Battle of Gettysburg. Guests and staff have reported numerous ghostly encounters, including apparitions, strange noises, and moving objects. Believed to be a Civil War nurse, Rachel is often seen and felt on the fourth floor of the hotel. Guests have reported drawers opening and closing on their own and personal items being moved. A ghostly woman in period dress is frequently spotted dancing alone in the hotel's grand ballroom. Some believe she is the spirit of a Civil War nurse taking a break, while others think she was a guest who died tragically. Visitors have seen a full-bodied apparition of a Union soldier standing in rooms or hallways before suddenly disappearing. He is sometimes observed checking doors, as if still on patrol. Given the building's history as a field hospital, it is not surprising that some reports mention sightings and the sounds of wounded soldiers. In addition to the known spirits, guests have seen full-body apparitions in hallways, rooms, and other areas of the hotel. Some of these apparitions have been captured in photographs. Footsteps in empty hallways, muffled voices, and whispers have all been heard by guests and staff. Items in rooms are known to go missing and later reappear in different places. Electrical equipment, such as TVs and lights, has also been reported to turn on and off by itself. Guests have experienced cold spots, the sensation of being watched, and the feeling of a hand brushing against them.
