Pen Ryn Mansion/Pen Ryn Estate, Bensalem
The Pen Ryn Mansion in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, is reportedly haunted by the ghosts of the Bickley family, the estate's original owners. The most persistent tales concern a disinherited son who drowned in the Delaware River and his wife, a "Lady in Black". The ghost is believed to be Robert Bickley, the son of Abraham Bickley, who owned the estate in the late 18th century. According to local lore, Abraham forbade his son from marrying his chosen love, which led Robert to leave the house in a rage on Christmas Eve. He cursed his family, and in despair, waded into the Delaware River, where he drowned. Robert's "gaunt and slimy" phantom is said to emerge from the river every Christmas Eve. The ghostly figure reportedly makes its way to the mansion, tapping on windows and knocking on doors in an attempt to get inside. A second spirit, described as Robert Bickley's wife, is also said to haunt the grounds. According to the story, she was never accepted by the Bickley family. The "Lady in Black" has been seen riding a large, dark horse in the area near the family crypt. Witnesses report that she wears a dark cape and carries a whip, sometimes screaming as she rides. If someone sees her, the ghost will reportedly spur her horse and pass harmlessly through them before vanishing into the woods. In 2021, a local paranormal investigation team reported other types of unexplained phenomena at the mansion, suggesting more than just the Bickley family haunts the property. Visitors and investigators report an unsettling feeling of being watched. Reports include feeling unexplained surges of electrical energy. A paranormal team described how a microphone case was moved and a tripod was knocked over in the ballroom during an investigation. An investigator recalled feeling as though someone was standing on their chest, making it difficult to breathe.
