Spirits of Hessian prisoners, who were held at the Barracks during the American Revolutionary War, are rumored to haunt the Powder Magazine Museum. While her grave is in the Indian Cemetery, the spirit of a girl named Lucy Pretty Eagle is believed to haunt the Coren Apartments, a former girls' dormitory, engaging in playful activities like slamming doors and turning pictures. Ethereal music from the turn of the century has been reported, an echo from the Barracks' early days. An invisible baby's cries are heard at the Washington Hall Guest House. A man in farmer's clothes and a well-dressed female student have been seen at the Letort View Community Center. A spectral Union soldier is sometimes blamed for breaking a framed print of J.E.B. Stuart in one residence. The Carlisle Barracks is one of the nation's oldest active military bases and once housed the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which closed 100 years ago.
