Shanghai Tunnels, Portland
The Shanghai Tunnels, or the "Old Portland Underground," are a network of tunnels below Portland, Oregon, that were used for transporting goods and, according to legend, kidnapped sailors known as "Shanghaiing". Today, they are considered one of America's most haunted places, with visitors and tour guides reporting experiences like ghostly touches, fleeting shadows, and even the apparition of Nina, a working girl who died there. The hauntings are attributed to the tunnels' dark past, which includes illicit activities like gambling, opium use, and the forced servitude of kidnapped men. The tunnels were used to transport sailors, often drugged and kidnapped, to ships at the Willamette River docks. This practice gave the tunnels their notorious name, as Shanghai was a distant, almost mythical destination for those taken against their will. During Prohibition, the tunnels served as a hub for underground bars, gambling dens, and storage for illegal alcohol. Gangs reportedly fought over territory, and those who disobeyed were punished in the dark passageways. Paranormal activity is frequently reported in the tunnels and above them. These experiences include: A sense of being watched. Unexplained touches. The smell of perfume or hearing distant sounds. Shadowy figures or apparitions. The apparition of "Nina," a former working girl who reportedly still wanders the basement of the Old Town Pizza, where she died.
