The Pendleton Center for the Arts in Oregon, a building that formerly housed the Umatilla County Library, is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a former librarian. According to legend, a young librarian who was jilted by her boyfriend tragically took her own life in the building's basement by hanging herself. Staff and visitors who have encountered the lingering spirit describe the following phenomena: Staff arriving in the morning have found books inexplicably knocked off the shelves. Whispering spirits and unexplained sounds are reported. Windows are sometimes found open without a logical explanation. Some visitors have reported an unsettling or creepy feeling in certain parts of the building, especially in the basement.
