Heceta Head Lighthouse, Florence

The Heceta Head Lighthouse Assistant Keeper's House in Florence, Oregon, is known as one of the most haunted places on the West Coast, home to the ghost of a woman named Rue. Rue, believed to be the wife of an assistant keeper from the 1890s, is said to haunt the house looking for her daughter, who died tragically in the lighthouse. Reports include seeing a gray-haired woman in a Victorian dress, hearing unexplained sounds like sweeping, and finding items moved or rearranged. Rue was the wife of an assistant lightkeeper and had two daughters. Her daughter tragically died at the lighthouse, with stories suggesting she drowned, possibly in the ocean or a water tank. After her daughter's death, Rue left the lighthouse, but her spirit is believed to have returned after her own death years later, forever searching for her lost child. A group of students using a Ouija board at the house reportedly spelled out "R-U-E," leading to the ghost being given this name. Guests and caretakers have reported seeing a gray, elderly woman, sometimes described as floating. A workman in the attic reportedly saw an apparition of an elderly woman in a Victorian gown in 1975. Unexplained sounds, such as scraping or sweeping, have been heard coming from the locked attic. Items in rooms are sometimes found moved or rearranged, and fresh beds show impressions as if someone had just sat on them. Rue's presence is not generally considered malevolent, but rather a sad, watchful guardian of the house and a reminder of the past.
