Fort Washita is described as haunted, most famously by the ghost of a woman known as "Aunt Jane," who was murdered by thieves before 1861 and whose remains were scattered at the fort. Stories suggest Aunt Jane's ghost appears as a woman in a white gown near the ruins and has even been said to possess a child named Molly Stalcup. Another story mentions a young officer who died of malaria at the fort, with his ghost, possibly calling for his love, Julia, seen near the site. A woman named Aunt Jane was murdered by thieves who were looking for hidden money, and her body was decapitated and scattered on the grounds of Fort Washita. Her ghost is said to be a common sight, floating near the ruins while wearing a white gown. Some versions of the story claim her spirit possessed a young girl named Molly Stalcup who lived near the fort, though the ghost eventually fled after Molly's mother began praying. A different legend tells the story of a young officer who was deeply in love with a woman named Julia. After his arrival at Fort Washita, he contracted a severe case of malaria and died shortly after, uttering Julia's name. His ghost is said to appear at the fort.
