Dead Woman's Crossing in Weatherford, Oklahoma, is a site with a true-crime origin story of murder and decapitation in 1905, which has since led to reports of paranormal activity, including a spectral woman weeping for her child and spectral sounds of wagons and buggies. The story centers on Katie James, whose murder, attributed to Fannie Norton, left a skeleton under a crossing on Deer Creek. In July 1905, Katie DeWitt James, a 29-year-old woman with a 14-month-old daughter, was traveling from her home in Weatherford to visit a cousin. She encountered a prostitute named Fannie Norton at the Weatherford train station. Witnesses later saw Norton taking Katie and her baby for a ride near Deer Creek. In August 1905, a full skeleton, still clothed, was found under the wooden wagon crossing at Deer Creek. Katie's head was severed from her body. Fannie Norton was suspected of the murder, and some accounts state that she later committed suicide by poison. Visitors report hearing the sound of a ghostly woman crying out for her baby. Some people have seen a formless blue light in the area. Katie's ghost is said to remain at the site, calling out to her missing daughter. Others report hearing the sounds of a passing buggy and wagon.
