Wheelock Mission, Millerton

The haunted legends of Wheelock Mission and Academy include the appearance of ghostly students in white dresses and the sounds of disembodied whispers and giggles, especially around the graveyard and chapel. Another story speaks of apparitions and unexplained bleeding from the Bodark tree where students were allegedly punished. The site, a former boarding school for Native American girls, has a complex history associated with the abuse and deaths of students, which contributes to its paranormal reputation. Visitors and locals report seeing phantom girls in white dresses skipping and singing hymns as they move between the chapel and the graveyard. Disembodied whispers and giggles are also reported to be heard on the grounds. A legend says a Bodark tree on the property was used for whipping students to death, and now its "blood" (sap) appears crimson under the moonlight. However, Bodark trees naturally have a thick, blood-colored sap, and there's no record of deaths from punishment at the site. Other visitors have reported walls and trees blending, and seeing apparitions sitting in chairs or hanging from trees.
