Shawnee's Ritz Theater is described as a reportedly haunted building with alleged paranormal activity and unexplained phenomena, including disembodied voices, footsteps, and flickering lights. The activity is attributed to spirits, such as Leo Montgomery, a projectionist who died in the theater, and Amelia, a former resident of the building's upper-level boarding house. Visitors have also reported feeling shoves or kicks, and spirits are sometimes believed to be following people home. The ghost of a projectionist named Leo Montgomery is said to linger in the theater, supposedly causing unexplained noises like voices and flickering lights. He died of a heart attack while showing a film. Another spirit, Amelia, is believed to have died of pneumonia when the building was used as a boarding house. People working in the building have reported hearing singing and footsteps on the stage when alone. Other experiences include unusual sounds and voices, as well as alleged scratching and kicking. Some reports suggest that wayward spirits from the theater are trying to follow people home after they leave. The theater has a long history, serving as the first in Shawnee to show "talkies" and originally being a dry goods store and boarding house before becoming a theater. In addition to Leo, the building is believed to be inhabited by spirits who lived there as boarding house residents in the early 20th century.
