Squire's Castle is described as haunted due to a legend about Mrs. Squire's death, but this story is largely considered false, as she died of pneumonia in her home. Despite the historical inaccuracies, visitors and local legends still report paranormal phenomena, such as seeing a ghostly red lantern moving through the grounds, hearing screams, or a spectral face peering from windows. The legend claims Mrs. Squire fell down the stairs in the castle after being frightened by her husband's trophies, though real death certificates show she passed away in her own home. The most popular haunting story claims that Mrs. Louisa Squire, the wife of oil executive Fergus B. Squire, was exploring the castle one night with a red lantern. She supposedly became terrified by her husband's hunting trophies displayed in the trophy room. Fleeing in fright, she fell down the stairs, broke her neck, and died. In reality, Mrs. Squire did not die at the castle. She died of pneumonia at home with her family at the age of 73. Visitors report seeing a glowing red lantern moving from window to window at night. Visitors claim to hear anguished screams emanating from the castle. A ghost face has been seen peering from a second-story window that no longer exists, and some have reported seeing Mrs. Squire herself wandering the grounds. Despite being debunked, the compelling story of Mrs. Squire's death continues to circulate and is a major part of the castle's lore.
