Western Carolina University, Moore Building, Cullowhee
The Moore Building at Western Carolina University is reputed to be haunted by the spirit of a female student who was tragically murdered in the building when it was a women's dormitory. The building is the oldest on campus, constructed in 1924, and has been closed since 2012. The most prominent story claims a resident of the Moore Building was raped and murdered in the 1980s. The murderer was allegedly arrested and sent to a mental institution. The student's spirit is rumored to have never left, haunting future generations of students who lived there. Another variation says a local man killed a female student after she rejected his advances. Residents and those near the building have reported hearing crying, screaming, and pacing on the third floor, where the murder supposedly occurred. Some former occupants of the Moore Building reported feeling as though they were being watched by an unseen presence. Even after the building was closed and locked, former campus security staff reportedly received regular calls about noises and sightings inside the building. Each time they investigated, they found the building secure and empty.
