The USS North Carolina in Wilmington is widely considered haunted, with reports of ghostly sightings and paranormal activity dating back decades. Having lost ten men during its active duty in World War II, the battleship is believed to be inhabited by the spirits of former crew members. Visitors and staff have described experiencing a wide range of ghostly phenomena on the ship, particularly in the lower decks and passageways. Sightings of full-bodied apparitions are common. One of the most frequently reported is a young, blonde sailor seen wandering the ship's passageways or looking out of portholes. Another apparition, believed to be a sailor who died in a 1942 torpedo attack, is said to appear in the washroom. Shadowy figures have also been seen disappearing as quickly as they appear. People report hearing footsteps in empty areas, disembodied voices, and doors and hatches slamming shut on their own. Some investigators have also captured electronic voice phenomena (EVP) recordings. Unexplained and sudden cold spots are often felt throughout the ship, especially in the lower levels. Visitors have reported being touched by an unseen presence, with some humorously attributing it to the playful spirit of a former sailor. Reports of lights and electronics turning on and off, and objects being moved or thrown by themselves, have been noted by witnesses.
