Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria is associated with the 1906 massacre of Will Harris, who killed five people and wounded 13 near the location before being killed by a mob. The site is reportedly haunted by the victims and Harris, with reported paranormal activity including apparitions, flickering lights, moving objects, strange noises, and a ghostly policeman. Will Harris, an escaped convict, arrived in Asheville to find his girlfriend, leading to a violent rampage on November 13, 1906, near the current location of Barley's Taproom. Harris murdered five people and wounded 13 others before being killed in a shootout with a mob. One of Harris's victims was reportedly killed on the exact spot where Barley's Taproom now stands. Visitors and staff have reported seeing shadowy figures. Lights have been seen flickering, and objects have been reported to move on their own. Strange sounds, such as random barking or other noises, have been heard. Some reports include the appearance of a ghost in an old police uniform. It is said that the spirits of the victims of the massacre, as well as Harris himself, haunt the area.
