Reed Gold Mine, Midland
The Reed Gold Mine ghost story involves Eleanor Mills, the wife of a neighbor to the Reed family, who fell down stairs after an argument with her husband. Her husband, horrified and fearing repercussions, disposed of her body in a mine shaft. She is said to haunt the area, with people reporting hearing her screams. Eleanor and her husband, Eugene, had a heated argument.
During or after the argument, Eleanor fell down the stairs in their home. Eugene discovered her body hours later and, in a state of panic or fear, dumped her body into a nearby mine shaft. It is said that Eleanor Mills' screams have never ceased and can still be heard in the vicinity of the mine. Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented commercial gold discovery in the United States, which led to the first gold rush.
