The Balsam Mountain Inn in Balsam, NC, is known as the "Grand Old Lady Hotel" and is reported to be haunted by a former guest, a womanizing "Sheriff" shot in 1928 who died in room 205. Guests report phenomena like whispers, disembodied giggling, objects moving, and doors slamming, with the hotel's current owners marking rooms with permanent, friendly spirits. Guests have heard footsteps in the hallways and whispers outside their doors. Shadow figures and "The Sheriff" himself have been seen. Objects have moved on their own, doors have slammed, and sheets have been pulled off beds. A former guest and womanizer who was shot outside the building in 1928 and died in room 205. He is considered a friendly resident by the hotel's owners, who mark rooms that are home to permanent ghosts with small iron "welcome" signs. The hotel was built in 1908 and was originally a railroad hotel. It has undergone restoration and was reopened in 1991. A 2020 documentary, Balsam, explored the hotel's spiritual activity and was followed by a 2021 documentary, "Balsam: A Paranormal Investigation" which featured Kane Hodder.
