The Mordecai House in Raleigh is considered by many to be the city's most haunted home, believed to be inhabited by the spirit of Mary Willis Mordecai Turk. Reports include sightings of a "lady in gray" in a period costume on the balcony, floating orbs, disembodied male voices, and unprompted piano music. Paranormal activity, such as doors opening and closing and pictures falling from walls after negative comments, has also been documented by investigative groups like the Ghost Guild. The primary entity believed to be in the house is Mary Willis Mordecai Turk, who lived in the home for many years. Visitors and investigators have reported seeing a figure in a period-style gray dress on the balcony, as well as misty or orb-like phenomena. Sounds of piano music have been heard, and a male voice was reportedly heard by female investigators in an upstairs bedroom. Doors have been observed opening and closing on their own, and pictures have fallen off walls, particularly after someone made a negative remark about the house. Electromagnetic activity has been detected within the house. The house itself is the oldest residence in Raleigh on its original foundation, with the oldest portion built in 1785 by Joel Lane.
