Attmore-Oliver House, New Bern
The Attmore-Oliver House in New Bern, NC is said to be haunted by the spirit of its last resident, Mary Taylor Oliver, and possibly other past inhabitants. Staff and visitors have reported paranormal activity in the historic home, including unexplained footsteps, objects moving on their own, and phantom noises. Mary Taylor Oliver, who lived in the house for most of her 91 years, is believed to be the primary spirit still lingering in the home. Many who have spent time in the house describe her presence as friendly and protective of her former property. People downstairs have heard someone walking around on the upper floor, where Oliver's bedroom was located. Staff members of the New Bern Historical Society, which now occupies the house, have reported seeing a cabinet door open and close by itself. The sound of someone rummaging through belongings in Oliver's former bedroom is another reported occurrence. In 2006, the North Carolina Ghost Hunters Society investigated the house and reportedly captured photographic evidence of orbs, suggesting a paranormal presence. While Mary Oliver is the most commonly cited ghost, other theories suggest additional spirits may be present: During a renovation, medical supplies from the Civil War era were found, leading some to theorize that the home may have been used as a Union hospital. This could explain the presence of multiple poltergeists or lingering energies. In a 2024 video tour of the area, a guide mentions that "some of the sons" who lived in the house may also haunt the property and are reluctant to leave. A WRAL.com video mentions reports of phantom cat meows and the sound of a child playing with toys. One theory suggests the haunting is connected to one of the nation's past smallpox epidemics.
