Chowan University is reportedly haunted by several spirits, including the famous "Brown Lady" who haunts the Columns Building, a piano-playing ghost in the Music Hall, a student who died by suicide in Belks Hall, and another who hanged himself in Mixon Hall. The Brown Lady, named for her 19th-century attire, is said to make her presence known through the sound of shifting fabric. The Columns Building (Brown Lady): The most famous ghost, the "Brown Lady," is said to linger on the third floor. Her presence is associated with the rustling sound of taffeta, the material of her 19th-century gowns. Music Hall: The spirit of a ghost who plays the piano is said to haunt this building. Mixon Hall: A student who died by hanging is reported to haunt this residence hall. Belks Hall: This building is said to be haunted by the ghost of a student who committed suicide, as well as a screaming and laughing little girl who rides her tricycle down the stairs.
