Stony Brook University Southampton Campus, Southampton
The Southampton campus of Stony Brook University is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of a young woman who died after falling down the stairs of the historic 1712 windmill located on the property. According to legends, her apparition has been seen peering out of the windmill's windows. The three-story windmill dates back to 1712, making it one of Long Island's oldest. It was relocated to the campus in 1890 and has served as a landmark for ships, a cottage, and a temporary residence for guests, including the playwright Tennessee Williams. A prevailing story claims that the daughter of the windmill's owner fell down the stairs and suffered a fatal injury. Her spirit is said to linger in the area, with some accounts reporting that her face has been seen from the windmill's windows.
