The NYS Capitol in Albany is described as haunted due to several legends and reported phenomena, most notably the story of the "capital demon" hidden in the stonework, the ghost of night watchman Samuel Abbott who died in a 1911 fire, and other unexplained occurrences like doors closing and lights flickering. Many of these stories are associated with the building's elaborate and sometimes mysterious carvings, as well as its overall gothic architecture, and are explored during the building's annual "Capitol Hauntings" tours. A popular tale claims that a disgruntled carver secretly carved a devil or demon face into the building's intricate stonework as a curse. This hidden carving is a famous attraction, with some believing that finding it without help means you are evil. On March 29, 1911, a fire broke out in the Capitol's library, and the body of night watchman Samuel Abbott was discovered after the blaze. Some visitors and staff report seeing his ghost or experiencing other phenomena, like doorknobs turning and lights flickering, which they attribute to him. The building's architecture, with its blend of medieval and Renaissance styles, its numerous grotesques, and hidden faces within the stonework, contributes to its haunted reputation. These carvings, many of which were created by European stone carvers, feature various mythical creatures and faces, adding to the atmosphere.
